What is MeditationMeditation allows the mind to calm the chatter of a thousand and one thoughts, as the mind calms down so does the body. With most meditation techniques the meditator becomes more relaxed than when they are a sleep. Yet meditation is not sleeping; one remains totally conscious and normally aware and alert. Meditation is not a hypnotic trance, nor is it a state of unconsciousness; it is purely a state of mental and physical quiet. Deeper awareness is gained by regular meditating. There are many meditation techniques such as visualisation, contemplation, using mantra’s, yantra or mandalas. As there are so many forms of meditation it opens the door for all to learn a technique(s) which is best suited to them. Meditation can be done sitting, standing, walking and dancing. There are many meditations which can be done anywhere at any time. No particular belief system is needed to meditate – it is accessible to all; women, men and children from all walks of life can, and do, meditate.
From the Latin - Meditari – (to engage in contemplation or reflection – to focus ones thoughts). Meditation is more than simply relaxation. Meditation clears the mind of any thoughts or focuses the mind on one thing – mantra (words), yantra (visual image), or the breath. There are many ways to meditate with many potential goals and therefore there is no one definition or technique that satisfies all possibilities.
How Can Meditation HelpMeditation can bring about balance between the logical and creative sides of the mind bringing full awareness and insight of our true nature. By learning to focus the mind, daily tasks can be achieved more efficiently. Relaxation of the muscles and slower breathing helps to reduce stress hormones and blood pressure. Meditation also allows you to pay attention to the chatter of your mind, and by learning to calm this chatter you become aware of your intuitive voice.
