Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, which is a variety of microcrystalline fibrous Quartz. The colour is due to minute quantities of various elements; and the banding is due to the gradual cooling of the silica. Specimens are cut and polished to create stunning examples. Turritella Agate is formed from fossil Turritella shells silicified in a chalcedony base. |
